Huebert's design and handset type for this handbill recalls the broadsides that advertised the sensational, scientific, silly and startling attractions as they promulgated during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, including at Detroit's very own New Wonderland Theatre, Eden Musée, and Menagerie, which once stood on Monroe Street near the Opera House.
This image is as both an advertisement and a commemoration of the Rotland Press project The Dreadfuls, based upon the Penny Dreadful—cheap popular serial literature containing tales of murder and misadventure, that were produced in London during the 19th century.
Ian Huebert is an American illustrator and printmaker. His woodcuts and ink drawings have appeared in numerous publications and self-published books. He has been a frequent collaborator with Rotland Press. He lives in Iowa City.
